A shining example to her peers, known to give her all in everything she sets her mind to is Leah Parry who was honoured with the prestigious White Blazer award, she has consistently excelled in the arts, sport, and service.

 

Durban, South Africa (23 September 2024) – Given the many obstacles young people face, it is always so admirable to witness a youngster demonstrating passion, perseverance, and a positive spirit!

A remarkable Durban Girls’ College Grade 12 student, Leah Parry, was honoured with the White Blazer, the school’s highest accolade.

During a special assembly on September 17, Leah was presented with the blazer by Karen Jones, Chair of the Board of Governors, and Heidi Rea, Executive Head.

This prestigious award is given to girls who have achieved Honours in three of the four categories: Academics, Culture, Sport & Service.

Leah’s outstanding accomplishments across Sport, Music and Service earned her a place among the select few to receive this award.

Only seven white blazers have been awarded over the past thirty years to the following recipients: Kim MacNeillie in 1994, Sarah Pudifin in 2002, Melissa Corfe in 2003, Amy Schaap in 2015, Cenelle Gounden in 2018, Sarah Sparks in 2022 and Jia Patel in April this year.

“Leah, the Head of Culture at Durban Girls’ College, has consistently demonstrated exceptional talent and dedication to Music. She has been awarded Special Honours for Music, having earned honours three times.

“Leah’s impressive achievements include representing South Africa at the Vienna University Philharmonic in Austria and performing in the ABRSM High Scorer’s Concert, showcasing her skills in violin, piano, and voice. Her musical journey began at seven, and her accomplishments have only grown,” shares Kelley Litkie of DGC marketing department.

A singing sensation

In 2023, she won the Grade 7 Recital Category, earning gold and silver awards for her vocal performances.

Leah’s achievements in Dramatic Arts include receiving Honours for Performing Arts in 2024. In 2022, she was awarded a Merit Certificate for Highly Commended Versatility in House Plays. Her success continued in 2023, with a Merit Certificate for Highly Commended Versatility and another for Outstanding Musical Direction in House Plays.

A force on the sports field

In Sports, Leah’s excellence extends to Athletics and Artistic Swimming, with KwaZulu-Natal Provincial representation and Honours for Athletics. She also served as Head of Cross Country this year, showcasing her leadership and passion.

A big heart for others

Her commitment to Service is equally remarkable, having earned DGC Honours for Service and the Duke of Edinburgh President’s Award in 2023 for completing over 250 hours of community service.

Leah’s leadership roles, including participation in the KwaZulu-Natal Youth Government Council and representing South Africa at the Loudoun International Youth Leadership Summit, further exemplify her contributions to society.
