Susan Webb came to the aid of an exhausted Egyptian Geese family, with help the geese were rounded up and released at a local dam.
Johannesburg, South Africa (03 January 2024) – Susan Webb and her trusty sidekick Sydney have changed the fate of an Egyptian Geese family. After hearing about the roaming geese, they set off to catch them and relocate them to a nearby dam so they could access water and live in a safer habitat.
It all started on the 30th of December 2023 when a neighbour shared pictures on Susan’s community WhatsApp group, saying that the little family had been walking up and down Auckland Avenue. It was clear the chicks were struggling.
Susan and Sydney set off to help, armed with two animal crates, blankets and a determination to make a difference. They managed to get the geese cornered by a neighbour’s garage and safely placed them into the animal crates to be transported.
Susan shared how the rescue mission took place on her Facebook page, along with a video of the release.
“It started with a WhatsApp message from a neighbour worried about some baby geese and parents walking up and down the road since 6 am.
I decided I had some time to help so with dog crates, pool net, blankets, plywood, safety vests, gloves coats and hats, Sydney and I set off to see if we could find them and help! They were literally around the corner! We managed to coral them in a Neighbor’s driveway.
The babies sat right down from exhaustion! Then luckily the neighbors were able to open the garage door so we herded them inside and closed the door. It was cool and calm and with the help of a blanket we got all 6 babies in the small crate. The adults were not happy with us, but struggled to really attack us in the confines of the garage. Quickly tossing blankets on them enabled us to put them both in the large crate! Success! A short drive to Westdene dam (where we hope they will be happy) and a successful release! Huge thanks to Sydney for doing the hard work and to all the neighbors for help!”
Susan has since had an update that the geese are still happily living at the dam. Take a look at the moment they were released below. It is a heartwarming sight.
