Emelda Africa started donating blood to the Groote Schuur Hospital’s blood clinic 10 years ago as a way to give back; she would use her lunch breaks to do good.
Cape Town, South Africa (13 July 2023) – Heroes of Groote Schuur is a Facebook page dedicated to highlighting the amazing people who work or visit the Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. This week we read about Emelda Africa, who works in the Accounts Department. She found a way to give back and save lives too!
The page highlights all the incredible working being done by the staff who keep everything running smoothly.
“I’ve worked at Groote Schuur for 32 years and for about the last 10 years I have regularly donated blood at the hospital’s blood clinic. I first went after a colleague suggested that I come with her and give a donation. From that time on I’ve donated blood.
I donate here because it’s very convenient, and generally, I’ll go every second month. It’s an easy and quick process that I do in my lunch hour.
It makes me feel good to donate. There’s a very important purpose in donating blood because there are people who desperately need it. One of my best friends is currently in hospital and he needed blood. It just made me realise how much patients are in need, and how important this service is.
You can really make a difference in somebody else’s life by doing this. Not everybody is able to give monetary contributions to help society, but giving your time and your blood is a simple way to help save people’s lives.” – Emelda Africa, Accounts
