The Cape of Good Hope SPCA were doing community visits and came across a family that was building a shelter for their dogs, the team stopped to get the story.

Gugulethu, Cape Town (14 May 2020) – Education Officers Junior Komani and Bongani Giyose were doing their daily rounds in Gugulethu when they saw something that warmed their hearts! The team walked over to a family that were building a small structure and asked what was happening.

The Mkhwandana family were building a make-shift kennel on the side of their home. They were using reclaimed materials to build a kennel for their dogs Spring and Heyi.

The family knows that winter in the Western Cape is awful, windy days with splattering rain and cold temperatures. They love their dogs and wanted to be sure they have some protection.

“On this chilly, wintery morning CoGH SPCA Education Officers Junior Komani and Bongani Giyose were on their daily Inspection rounds in New Rest, Gugulethu.

Together they witnessed an inspiring and truly beautiful display of kindness from the Mkhwandana family. The family was building a shelter from any and all available materials that could be found, to keep their beloved dogs Spring and Heyi warm and protected in the coming colder weather.

Bongani and Junior offered to bring their pets in for sterilisation only to be happily informed that they already were! It was abundantly clear to see how loved and well taken care of these pets were. The Mkhwandana’s are a true example of responsible pet owners and we hope their community follows their shining display of compassion.

Bongani and Junior will be returning to visit the Mkhwandana’s home tomorrow to provide some warm blankets for Spring and Heyi.”

The family have warmed the hearts of all involved as well as the community of SPCA supporters. We are so glad the SPCA went back with supplies to keep the animals warm.

So, if you have any blankets at home you no longer need, donate them to your local SPCA, they are used to help animals all over South Africa. Also remember, if you are cold, your pets are cold so be sure to provide them with somewhere warm to snuggle up.
