Farmers in the Free State helped EMS rescue a stranded school bus during recent flooding saving 23 children and 3 adults.
While some parts of the country are battling crippling droughts, other parts of the country are facing massive floods due to continuous rainfall. In the Free State on Tuesday the 21st of February, a flash flood caught a bus filled with school children and teachers in its current.
“Flood warnings have been issued for the eastern parts of Eastern Cape, southern KwaZulu-Natal, the southern and western parts of the Free State and eastern Northern Cape, and Johannesburg and its surrounding areas”
“There’s an 80% chance of rain for most of Gauteng, the Free State and the Northern Cape, while there’s a 30% to 60% chance of rain for the rest of the central region – extending to the east coast of KwaZulu-Natal – also predicted”
Farmers from nearby Koopies Farms joined in the rescue attempts. Assisting the Free State EMS, they used their tractors to help get the 23 children and 3 adults safely off the trapped bus. There were no injuries sustained during the event which is a huge positive! The school bus was coming from Sarel Cilliers Primary school in Koppies
“It is believed that this bus was swept by heavy currents of rain water and slid into a ditch. The Farm is near Engen 1 Stop on N1 near Koppies area on the R723 road.”
