Merry Month

A hearty meal for lunch will be served every day to the hungry and homeless during the merry month in Cape Town thanks to the Feed5000 initiative!

Cape Town, South Africa (08 December 2023) — When we think about the merry month, dreams of delicious dinners and foodie feasts with family and friends emerge in the privileged mind. But, the striking contrast between what is an expected treat for some and an unexpected lifeline for others, unfortunately, becomes all too apparent as the season further unwraps.

Is there hope? But of course.

While for the striking numbers of homeless and destitute people in our country the idea of getting any meal—let alone a hearty one— is a gift in and of itself, their hope is not futile.

In Cape Town, several feeding programmes and schemes work hard to make what should not be a gift, but a given—food—available as often as possible. However, during the merry month, many of these providers close, meaning that finding food does become a problem for those who rely on these services.

However, the Hope Exchange, which regularly feeds the City’s homeless and stands as a bright yellow beacon of (you guessed it) hope on Roeland Street, are an organisation who are not going on break without a plan of action!

Thanks to the #Feed5000 initiative they’ve teamed up to do alongside Ladles of Love, their promise is to serve delicious lunches every single day from 14 December to 15 January.

“The Hope Exchange does not like to have anyone feel that they have been forgotten when the rest of us might have a table under a roof to enjoy time with our nearest and dearest,” the team shared.

#Feed5000 is an official feeding programme that aims to provide over 12,000 meals to the homeless community. With Ladles of Love in their corner, they predict that even more meals than this will be on the cards.

Right now, the initiative is looking for volunteers to help prepare and serve the food. To deal with the national pickle of food prices, they’re also encouraging anyone who can sponsor R250 will be able to feed one person for the merry month until the end of #Feed5000 in January.

Other ways to come to the party include making ingredient donations or sponsoring a day. You can find out more about all the ways to make this scheme a roaring success, here.
