water bubble day zero water consumption

A team of engineers have designed an amazing new invention, it’s an edible water bubble and its going to save lots of wasted plastic, possibly the world too!

The Skipping Rock Lab came up with the idea of a plastic free water bottle in 2013, they have been working tirelessly to come up with a viable option and have finally done it! They have invented an edible water bubble.

“Skipping Rocks Lab is an innovative sustainable packaging start-up based in London. We are pioneering the use of natural materials extracted from plants and seaweed, to create packaging with low environmental impact.”

They set up a crowdfund to help raise money to fund the project. They aimed to raise £400,000 but have raised nearly double that with £787,090.

Based in London the team have called the water bubble the Ooho! They are created by encasing a blob of drinking water within an edible membrane made from a natural seaweed extract.

“The consumption of non-renewable resources for single-use bottles and the amount of waste generated is profoundly unsustainable. The aim of Ooho is to provide the convenience of plastic bottles while limiting the environmental impact.”

It is 100% made of Plants & Seaweed and biodegradable in 4-6 weeks, just like a piece of fruit. It’s edible, can be flavoured and coloured. It also has a shelf life and would need to be consumed in a matter of days.

The Ooho is currently available on the market but is mostly being showcased at events and festivals. The product will be a huge hit when it enters the world market.

The lab created a video to show exactly how it works and peoples reactions to trying the water bubbles out for the first time.
