Roof

Concerned for the safety of her son’s nanny, Penny Biram has started raising funds to help her nanny replace the roof that was blown right off her home.

Over the last week, Johannesburg has been experiencing some strong and violent weather. The storms that have blown through the region have come with violent thunder and lightning as well as heavy rainfall and powerful winds. The wave of storms has affected many Joburg residents, especially those living in informal housing.

Penny Biram was shocked to hear that her son’s nanny, Susan, had been battling with home security since the storm on Monday night. The winds ripped the roof off of her home and left the small family waterlogged and vulnerable.

“Not only is this a weather issue, but also a security issue, as she has a 4-year old and 15-year old daughter that have to lock themselves in the house each day after school so that no one steals from them or hurts them.”

“The roof damage just adds to the issue of security. Susan’s husband was killed in a car accident when their youngest was one, so she is a single mother and this incident is causing her a massive amount of stress.”

Penny was emotionally moved by this incident and unable to help cover the full cost of the repairs, she decided to set up a BackaBuddy campaign to help raise funds towards the expensive repair.

“She (Susan) has discovered that to fix the roof alone, she will need R4000.00, and this will dig massively into her monthly budget, as well as completely take away from the money she had saved for the Christmas holidays.”

Penny was the first to donate to the fund, giving Susan R1000 towards the repair. Another donor also gave a donation and the hope is that enough money will be raised by the end of the weekend so that repairs can start in the new week.
