Gogo Ntozini Nothintele, an 83-year-old woman from the Eastern Cape, had her world turned upside down when she lost her sight four years ago. Despite her challenges, she remained determined to live life to the fullest but her desire to maintain independence led to a frightening experience. Thankfully angels soon swept in to restore her sight.

Eastern Cape, South Africa (28 November 2024) – Gogo Ntozini Nothintele from the Eastern Cape longed so desperately to enjoy walks in her village and soak up the beauty of her surroundings after sadly losing her sight four years ago.

Despite her challenges, Gogo Ntozini remained determined to maintain her independence. However, her attempts to navigate her surroundings often led to frustration and disappointment.

The 83-year-old woman once got lost in her own village while trying to take a walk by herself as she still wanted to be independent.

All Gogo Ntozini longed for was to be outside on her own every once in a while, as her blindness sadly confined her to home.

“She thought she could do it (walk) on her own but little did she know that she was going to get lost.

“She was too shy to ask people to help show her the way back home cause they would make fun of her. So she just kept on trying to do it on her own until she got so tired of going in circles and eventually gave in and asked for help,” shares eye care organisation Grace Vision.

It is so humbling to realise how something so simple as a walk outside, which many of us get to do so freely and easily, was taken away from Gogo Ntozini the moment her deteriorating eyesight eventually faded completely.

Thankfully, that was not the end of her story, a joint Cataract Removal Initiative by Grace Vision and Operation Healing Hands, Gogo Ntozini received a free and life-changing cataract surgery and she is so happy to finally be able to see again, thanking God for getting her sight back!
