The Gift of the Givers team has thanked their community for helping bring ten criminals to justice after their Athlone office was burgled earlier this week.
Cape Town, South Africa (12 January 2023) – When news broke that the Gift of the Givers’ office in Athlone was broken into, the community quickly helped weed out the criminals. The team have thanked the community for playing such a vital role in bringing the culprits to justice.
Aside from the vital computer and laptop equipment stolen, the burglars also took all the donations that were being sorted for delivery to the Khayelitsha community currently facing unimaginable loss due to endless fires.
The burglars took advantage of the loadshedding to access the property. According to Gift of the Givers, video footage shared by the neighbouring community, showed a total of seven people accessing the property. The burglars not only stole items desperately needed by the community, but they also damaged the property and left it in an absolute state.
After the burglary took place, Gift of the Givers notified the public and the public quickly rallied to support them and find out who was responsible. South Africans finally got a chance to pay-it-forward to the organisation that has supported everyone through so much.
Anonymous calls were made and the details of where the items were being stored, were shared with the team and the authorities. Before long, they were able to access the properties, confirm they contained stolen goods and made several arrests.
“Response time from the SAPS was incredible in our time of need, and the community were amazing, within minutes they sent very accurate information that resulted in suspects that broke into our Cape Town office being taken into custody.” – Gift of the Givers
A total of ten people were arrested by the joint efforts of the Maitland Flying Squad, SAPS K9, National Intervention Unit, Metro Police, Metro K9, and Law Enforcement.
Whatever is not recovered, will be covered by insurance and the organisation can get back to making a difference in the communities of South Africa.
