wildfire oven dog

A student found the dogs hiding from the Greece wildfires in an outdoor oven and saved them.

If you have been following the global news, you will know that Greece has been facing the most devastating wildfires. The fire is being called one of the most deadly in the last century. It has sadly taken the lives of 91 people while 25 more are still unaccounted for.

Homes and lives have been destroyed and many animals fled for safety. One dog was so panicked, he swam into the ocean and planted himself safely on a distant rock. Thankfully, he was found, taken to safety and reunited with his family.

Another hopeful story has emerged from the devastation…

Two dogs were found at a completely destroyed home, taking shelter in an outdoor oven. The oven, built to withstand high temperatures, provided an unlikely safe space for the dogs.

Both dogs were mostly unharmed. They had singed fur and a few burns but were declared to be in good health after the ordeal.

Physiotherapy student Artemis Kyriakopoulou was the one who found them and filmed the moment on her phone. She was working as an animal rescue volunteer to find any animals after the fire. The one dog had been sitting on the doorstep, waiting for the owners to return while the other was laying down inside the oven.

“We found this creature in a furnace of a burnt out house at an area of Mati that has been completely destroyed. The dog was burned, hurt, hungry, and of course, scared as we managed to save him and his sibling who was in better condition. They have been both transferred to a vet. The second dog that is not shown in the video was patiently awaiting his owner at the entrance to the house. Please help us to find their owners if they are still alive.”

The dogs were taken to a local animal shelter. The organisation sent out messages to try to find their owners but no one came forward so the dogs were put up for adoption. They were quickly rehomed due to their famous story.
