Heroes of Groote Schuur regularly share posts about the staff and patients at the hospital but now more than ever, we get to see the heroes of South Africa!
Cape Town, South Africa (08 April 2020) – Heroes of Groote Schuur is a Facebook page dedicated to highlighting the amazing people who work or visit the Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town.
The most recent post has us tearing up with pride! Sister Carmen Miller put her hand up and volunteered to be on the frontline of the COVID-19 pandemic in South Africa. She is doing the testing at Groote Schuur hospital so that others won’t have to.
She spoke to the Heroes of Groote Schuur Facebook page and shared her reasoning behind her choice. The post has left many in awe of her selflessness and bravery. Sister Miller received many messages of praise, and South Africans are sending her love and support!
“I had a choice. I decided I’m going to do this because others weren’t comfortable with it, knowing the risks. If it’s a team that’s willing to be there, you will get the best out of people. Rather have staff that are willing to be there because a lot of staff are scared and anxious at the moment. I won’t say I’m scared, I think I’m over that now.
I only told my parents last night that I’m working on the frontline. I had to tell them because now I’m going to be staying at the hostel. Not to protect myself, but to protect them.
I feel like I can make a difference. The patients are even more anxious than we are, so I just want to put a smile on their faces.” – Sister Carmen Miller
It is medical staff like Sister Miller that give us hope each day. We start and end each day, sending strength and good wishes to the people on the frontline of the virus in South Africa. We thank them for their bravery and for the efforts in treating the virus.
How do you give thanks each day? Let us know in the comment section.
