Dr Brian Ruff has been honoured for decades of making a difference in the South African healthcare sector, working to make it more affordable to those in need.

Cape Town, South Africa – The Board of Healthcare Funders (BHF) has presented a Titanium Award to Dr Brian Ruff for his outstanding contribution to healthcare. Announced at the BHF Conference, which runs from 21 to 24 July in Cape Town, the award recognises and honours professionals and organisations that are driving positive change in South Africa’s healthcare sector.

After three decades of work in healthcare, both public and private, Ruff has an acute sense of the structural problems driving the crisis of affordability that the sector faces. Wanting to be an active part of a solution, he founded healthcare management company PPO Serve, with a team of like-minded individuals in 2014. Their aim is to make the sector better for patients and doctors, ensuring access to good quality care, delivered at a good price.

Over the past four years, PPO Serve has worked with clinicians to form commercial multidisciplinary teams and networks that can deliver high-quality care at volume. This includes maternity care programme, The Birthing Team and HIV testing and treatment network, GP Care Cell.

Ruff is also the driver behind the development of innovative population health projects and Value Care Teams, which are geared to care for complex and geriatric patients, using all available local resources to reduce hospital admissions and preventable medical crises.

“We believe that doctors should be in control of and accountable for clinical decisions, with funders backing them through value-based care payment models. It’s an honour to be recognised for the work we are doing to make healthcare in South Africa more sustainable and better for all,” says Ruff.
