It is International Nurse’s Day and the Heroes of Groote Schuur Facebook page have been honouring various nursing departments all day.

Cape Town, South Africa (12 May 2020)Heroes of Groote Schuur is a Facebook page dedicated to highlighting the amazing people who work or visit the Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town.

The page is highlighting all the incredible nurses that work at the hospital today for International Nurse’s Day.

International Nurse’s Day happens annually on the 12th of May. This year we hope to highlight these brave men and women for the work they do. This year the theme is: Nursing the World to Health. At a time like this, the nurses we meet are the biggest heroes of all! They risk their lives daily to ensure the safety of everyone.

International Nurse’s Day is held on the 12th of May as that was the day Florence Nightingale was born. This year is the 200th anniversary of Florence’s birth.

2020 has been designated as the Year of the Nurse, and the Midwife by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in recognition of the contribution nurses make, and the risks associated with nursing shortages.

Now more than ever, we have learned the importance of having able nursing staff. The pandemic we are facing has become a reality for every person on the planet. We are all affected by it but nobody more, than the nurses themselves.

Take a look at the Heroes of Groote Schuur below. They were asked why they chose to nurse, and they all answered how it is their passion, how they love their patients and helping others, it is heartwarming!
