Roydon Filander is an Asset Manager at Groote Schuur Hospital but in his spare time, he is also a community hero; helping the public with their fitness.
Eerste River, Cape Town, South Africa (09 June 2023) – Roydon Filander has a passion for fitness. By day he works as an asset manager at Groote Schuur Hospital but by night and every other spare moment, he helps his community with their fitness, running a donation-based boot camp to help people get fit and lose weight. His generous classes have made him a community hero in our eyes!
Heroes of Groote Schuur highlighted Roydon’s story in May. Heroes of Groote Schuur is a Facebook page dedicated to highlighting the amazing people who work or visit the Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town.
The page is highlighting all the incredible work being done by the staff who keep everything running smoothly. Heroes featured on the page often have the most interesting jobs but in this case, it’s Roydon’s hobby that has us feeling proud! This is his story:
“I’ve worked in the Asset Management Department at Groote Schuur for 10 years. Before that I was at Red Cross Children’s Hospital.
I enjoy my job. As long as I can help people I am happy. I am responsible for logging all the assets that come into the hospital – from ultrasound machines, to chairs, to teaspoons for the kitchen.
At home in Eerste River I run a bootcamp with another guy as a community project. We have over 30 people that come and train with us every day. We ask people to pay R10 if they are able to. But if not that is also okay. We volunteer to do it for the community.
I love to help people with their mental health and body fitness. And we have made major progress in Eerste River. So I wanted to bring that over to the hospital as well. There was a slot available in the new Wellness Centre, so I thought let me get involved.
I enjoy being able to change people’s lives and change their way of thinking. Everything starts with hard work. If people are willing to put in the work then I will be there for them. From teenagers to 60-year-olds. We will motivate them.
A lot of people have lost a lot of weight and that is the ultimate reward for us. We are helping people lose weight and gain physical strength and mental strength. For me, as long as I’m meeting people and building new friendships it’s a win. And seeing people smile and helping them reach their goals.” – Roydon Filander, Asset Management Clerk
