The St Andrew’s hockey team were in Stellenbosch for camp and used their time to support the community by sorting donations.
Stellenbosch, South Africa (11 April 2024) – Since the storms in the Western Cape left thousands homeless, donations have been arriving day in and day out. The St Andrew’s School for Girls were away on hockey camp and decided to lend a helping hand in sorting donations.
“More than a hockey camp – Our hockey girls in Stellenbosch have stepped up to help the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport in their efforts to help the community affected by the severe winds over the last few days. Over 1000 people in the Stellenbosch area lost their homes, and our girls are helping sort out the donations for these community members.”
Donations have been for various clothing items and shoes. Sorting them into sizes and types can be a long-winded task, but thanks to the help of the hockey team, a local rugby team, and a few other helpful volunteers, the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport worked through the donations quickly.
The young ladies, who attend school in Bedfordview, Gauteng, are a long way from home but ready and willing to help others. Thanks to their efforts, thousands of people have been helped stay warm and clothed during this ordeal.
The Stellenbosch Academy of Sport thanked everyone involved, sharing a video of their efforts online.
“Thank you to each and everyone who pitched in to help us help those affected by the extreme weather conditions these past few days.”
