Young musicians got a glimpse of their futures as performers recently after experiencing what, for many, was their first taste of opera at Cape Town’s Artscape.
Cape Town, South Africa (20 July, 2023) — Young musicians from the Khayelitsha Children’s Choir (KCC) and Masidlale Grassroots Project got a glimpse of their futures as performers recently and inspiration echoed through the opera’s theatre.
Any creative will tell you that the firsts matter. The first time an artist visits a gallery hardly leaves them and an actor’s first visit to the cinema tends to stay etched in the heart.
This brand of core memory recently happened for many young musicians in Cape Town who, despite knowing how to play a plethora of orchestral instruments (and being able to identify the different ones as part of the performance) had never seen an opera up close.
The students were invited to experience the final matinee of Cinderella (Cendrillon) at Artscape in Foreshore. Here, the Cape Town Opera lent itself to a performance that would travel beyond the ears and straight to the heart.
“They were captivated, and seeing their joy and wonder was proof yet again of the positive impact that music and opera has on young hearts and minds,”shared Madré Loubser, Head of Youth Development and Education at Cape Town Opera.
The bigger sound is that of the future and potential, something the Youth Development and Education at Cape Town Opera is helping pave.
By making cultural moments like these more accessible, the next Pretty Yende or Ofentse Pitse might just be in the making from this very crowd.
