James Blunt breaks down in poignant music video starring dying father: "We're just two grown men saying goodbye"

This is the most heartbreaking yet somehow beautiful thing you will see today. Get the tissues ready.

Global (19 January 2020)James Blunt has released one of the most heartbreaking music videos of his career for his new song ‘Monsters’, one of the highlights from his acclaimed UK Top 3 album ‘Once Upon A Mind’ – out now on Atlantic Records.

Blunt’s “Monsters” is a song in which the singer is addressing his father. And it is the most heartbreaking thing you will see today. The simple, minimal and stirring track is one of the most personal songs Blunt has ever written, and the stark, emotive video was conceived by Blunt personally. It features the artist vulnerably singing the song to his Dad for the first time.

“Monsters is a eulogy to my father – except he’s still alive and kicking. But he’s not been well – his kidneys are functioning at just 11%. And with that realisation, I needed to tell him that, to me, he’s more than just a father. He’s my friend too, and that I love him.”

Blunt’s father, Charles Blount, has Stage 4 Chronic Kidney disease, so he asked if he’d like to be in the video with him.

Lyrics

Oh, before they turn off all the lights
I won’t read you your wrongs or your rights
The time has gone
I’ll tell you goodnight, close the door
Tell you I love you once more
The time has gone
So here it is
I’m not your son, you’re not my father
We’re just two grown men saying goodbye
No need to forgive, no need to forget
I know your mistakes and you know mine
And while you’re sleeping, I’ll try to make you proud
So daddy, won’t you just close your eyes?
Don’t be afraid, it’s my turn
To chase the monsters away
Oh, well I’ll read a story to you
Only difference is this one is true
The time has gone
I folded your clothes on the chair
I hope you sleep well, don’t be scared
The time has gone
So here it is
I’m not your son, you’re not my father
We’re just two grown men saying goodbye
No need to forgive, no need to forget
I know your mistakes and you know mine
And while you’re sleeping, I’ll try to make you proud
So daddy, won’t you just close your eyes?
Don’t be afraid, it’s my turn
To chase the monsters away
Sleep a lifetime
Yes, and breathe a last word
You can feel my hand on your own
I will be the last one, so I’ll leave a light on
Let there be no darkness in your heart
But I’m not your son, you’re not my father
We’re just two grown men saying goodbye
No need to forgive, no need to forget
I know your mistakes and you know mine
And while you’re sleeping, I’ll try to make you proud
So daddy, won’t you just close your eyes?
Don’t be afraid, it’s my turn
To chase the monsters away
