Johannes has no earthly possessions but the thing he loves most in this world is his loving and faithful companion cat that he named Lady.
Sandton, South Africa (21 February 2020) – On this eve of Valentine’s Day last week, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) shared a heart-warming story of LOVE with South Africa.
“Meet Johannes … one of the most caring and responsible people we have had the pleasure of assisting. He has no earthly possessions and lives in a veld, but he is rich beyond measure because he has a loving and faithful companion cat that he named Lady.”
Lady had given birth to a litter of kittens, and Johannes realised that he could not care for both Lady and all her babies, so he took them to the Sandton SPCA. He surrendered the babies and asked if the team could sterilise Lady.
“WITH PLEASURE”, we said. After Johannes said a tearful goodbye to Lady, assuring her that he would be back to collect her soon. Our Kennel Manager and Vet Clinic staff took her off in the cat carrier to get comfortable in the clinic.
OH. MY. WORD. Lady turned out to be a real feral, feisty kitty. She hissed, spat and fought, making for a very challenging patient. No one could get close to her without full riot gear on, but we won the fight and, Lady was sterilised and treated.”
Johannes returned the next day to collect Lady and what the team witnessed was pure love and devotion. When Lady heard Johannes, she jumped up and literally flung herself onto the cage door to greet Johannes.
Johannes’ devotion to Lady inspired us to select him as our SPAR hero of the week. Each week we select one person as our hero for inspiring you, our readers. As a thank you, SPAR provides a gift voucher to the hero.
We sent Johannes’ voucher to the team at the Sandton SPCA and they took him on a shopping spree at the Fontana SPAR in Morningside this morning.
The team confirmed that he was overjoyed and loved the experience of shopping for some much-needed items! We love days like this when we see how the power of social media can change lives, even just a little bit!
The kittens will be up for adoption in a few weeks so keep an eye on the SPCA’s page to find out when they will be ready for new homes.
