Joy is no longer the Ottery Stray; today, she has her very own human who will love and care for her; the best part is her kennel mate got to join.

Cape Town, South Africa (02 June 2021) – We shared Joy’s story back in February when she reached the height of her social media fame. She rose to fame for being a very elusive stray in the Ottery area. Thankfully she was caught and taken to safety.

Joy spent weeks getting away from rescuers, causing many a good-hearted animal lover to panic in attempting to rescue her. Thankfully, the Animal Welfare Society of SA (AWSSA) was up for the job of tracking her and trapping her.

Sadly the city of Cape Town has a big problem with dumped and feral animals, which has exploded in the last few years. For example, in 2011, the stray dog population totalled at least 230 000. It is scary to think so many animals are left to fend for themselves.

Joy’s story isn’t unique, but because she was very pregnant at the time and terrified of everyone, she warmed the hearts of thousands of people.

AWSSA placed her with a kennel mate to help keep her calm, and before long, the pair were the best of friends. Thankfully a loving couple visiting AWSSA saw both Joy and her friend Sheena. They decided to do a double adoption, giving both animals a loving home and maintaining that comfort built between the pooches.

“Who can forget the run-around that Joy gave everyone until she was finally trapped and admitted into our care at the beginning of the month.

Well, the good news is that our galivanting girl has joined her forever loving family together with her new best friend and kennel companion Sheena.

Her transformation was quite spectacular. She arrived nervous and used to walk with her tail tucked between her legs with that ready to flee look written all over her face.

Fast forward one month and Joy is strutting around with her tail up looking for a lap to keep warm.”

This is the happy ending we have been waiting for.
