South African winters range from sunny and frozen, skin-burning cold to wet, windy and bone-chilling cold – We can all agree they have a bite, so making sure dogs have kennels to brave any conditions.
Cape Town, South Africa (24 May 2021) – Over the years, there has been an increase in people and organisations building dog kennels out of scrap wood and palettes. This has happened because while South African winters may be warm in the daytime, they are brutally cold at night.
There are thousands of animals that do not have adequate shelter when the weather turns, and many suffer unfairly. We have featured many stories about kennels being built for animals in need. The latest story we have to share is from ‘Giving is Living’.
Giving is Living – A Savara Initiative builds dog kennels for animals in need throughout Cape Town. Cape Town winters are very cold, wet and windy, meaning dogs often sit shivering in muddy, flooded spaces. So having a kennel that is off the wet ground and deep to avoid rain and wind is a massive bonus.
To date, the Giving is Living kennel project has made 150 kennels. They work in partnership with several animal welfare organisations that work in the townships and Cape Flats areas.
A kennel costs just R250 and are delivered to families supported by the animal welfare organisations in the area. Giving is Living is hoping to boost its donations as winter sets in.
If you ever find yourself sitting on the couch on a cold winter evening and wanting to do something to help someone else, this is a great way to give back. You can find out more about the initiative via their Facebook page here.
