Rubi’s Rainbow of Hope shared a beautiful story about a group of women who came together to give young ladies sanitary pads and face masks.
Khayelitsha, South Africa (17 June 2020) – A group of ladies started collecting sanitary pads so they could address a serious issue at Khayelitsha’s Site B. A loss of income has made it near impossible for young ladies in poor communities to access sanitary pads.
This issue has always been around and many girls miss out on vital school time because they don’t have access to sanitary pads. The lockdown has put the issue on the sidelines as many organisations focus on feeding communities.
Laurie Rachel Shone and friends decided to focus on menstrual health during the lockdown. They teamed up with a group from Khayelitsha’s Site B, to make sure their efforts reached as many young ladies as possible.
They started collecting sanitary pads and masks to make up the packs. In the end, they collected enough to help 600 young ladies.
Working in collaboration with Khanyisa Vedala, they went to hand out the packs.
“We’ve just returned from Site B and Khanyisa Kwaito Vedala where we handed out our Sanitary Pad Packs. To everyone who contributed, we seriously cannot thank you enough. We left with the fullest of hearts and feel so grateful for being able to provide for more than we could have ever imagined.” – Laurie Rachel Shone
