Sesona Mahashe is an inspiring young woman from Knysna who made her dreams come true with the help of KILT!

spar hero of the week

Knysna, South Africa (28 May 2024) – Sesona Mahashe has been dubbed a “shero” for her efforts in academics. It all started when she discovered the Knysna Initiative for Learning and Teaching in 2019 while attending Percy Mdala High School and joined the Vocational Launch Programme.

The Vocational programme is a three-year journey designed to prepare high-achieving Grade 11 students for their first year in a science or business degree. Sesona was selected as one of these students to take part in the programme, and now she is about to graduate from university as an Audiology Student.

“Participants receive extra coaching in two STEM subjects, power-packed life skills training, and a focus on computer literacy. Each university-bound student is paired with a mentor for additional support.”

Sesona’s journey to study Audiology was inspired by her own struggles with hearing loss and her determination to help others. She is currently completing her studies through Wits University, a long way from Knysna but not without support! To qualify, she selected Cape Town as her community service location and was accepted as an Audiologist at the Red Cross War Memorial Hospital in Cape Town. By 2025, she’ll be a fully qualified Audiologist!

“We can’t wait to see where her path takes her next.” – KILT

KILT was established in 2016 to help build an empowered community through education and became an NPC in 2022. It was started by Ms Gill Marcus after she retired as Governor of the Reserve Bank. Knysna-based school principals approached her and asked for help with problems they faced in their schools. Together they were able to address many of the problems these schools faced.

“KILT is an excellent endeavour for the community as a whole, given that its initiatives not only equip us for successful outcomes in our future occupations but also play an essential part in producing remarkable members of society.”- Sesona Mahashe

Since starting KILT, many children have been given the chance to shine! From heading overseas to compete in spelling bees, to reaching for the stars and the unknown in Cape Town; the young minds they support, have had opportunities to take on their most exciting challenges, often not seen in small towns. KILT makes sure every child they work with, has a chance at greatness!
