Kindness matters: Teenager's act of kindness in Starbucks goes viral

Because you actually never know how a simple act of kindness can completely turn someone’s day around.

Mackenzie Mauller, a 19-year-old student from Ohio, simply paid for a stranger’s coffee at a Starbucks drive-thru, not knowing how big a difference her small act of kindness would make.

As it turned out, the woman who she had bought a coffee for was actually a neighbour who’d recently fallen upon hard times after losing her father.

After receiving the coffee, Nicole Clawson found out that Mauller lived nearby and decided to pop a hand written note in her mailbox.

Mauller took to Twitter to share the beautiful note.

Clawson’s note and the Starbucks act of kindness has touched the hearts of thousands of people on Twitter, with the tweet garnishing 21,000 retweets and 82,000 likes.

“Thank you for the coffee! I rarely go to Starbucks and treat myself, but the last couple of months have been a bit of a struggle. My father just passed away and he was also my babysitter. My family and my children have had a really hard time. This morning my babysitter called off sick and I had to take the day of work.

I decided to buy my kids breakfast and get myself coffee with total guilt because I am going to be a stay-at-home mom for a while.

Since I was not planning to go this route in my life, I was not emotionally and financially prepared to quit working.

I cried when I found out you were so sweet to buy my coffee and thrilled to see you pull in a couple houses down from where I live. I felt it necessary for you to know that what you did for me was more than just a coffee.

It was something that has turned my whole day around, put tears in my eyes and a smile on my face and I feel so grateful. Thank you.”

Since the tweet, the two have become friends with Mauller even offering to babysit Clawson’s kids.

Clawson took to Twitter to reply to the viral tweet.

“Thank you for the coffee, finding me (since we’re neighbours) to thank me for writing you a card and offering to babysit on top of everything else to help me out. You truly are the sweetest and a wonderful person who deserves recognition.

My children have been aware and apart of all of this since the beginning. This has been such a great learning opportunity for them, on how to treat others, no matter what. They are excited to pay it forward, and treat others with kindness and selflessness.”
