Kitten

The weather is getting colder so it is important to check our cars for kittens and cats that retreat into them for the warmth. One very lucky kitten was saved in Durban.

Moon, a sweet-natured kitten, was rescued by emergency services after she was spotted hiding out in the engine bay of a strangers car. A team of security and paramedics dismantled the car to get the kitten out safely.

The owner of the car noticed the kitten and alerted officials for assistance. The car owner was too scared to move the car, fearing that Moon would be injured in the process.

Marshall Security spokesman Kyle van Reenen spoke with TimesLIVE to share details about the rescue mission.

“A lady driver was concerned for the kitten’s safety and was battling to get the cat out. When we arrived we could see the cat inside the engine bay‚ peering out from beneath all of the hoses and wires‚” he said.

“After a lengthy operation, we managed to free the cat by dismantling the car’s side dust cover. The cat was found firmly wedged inside the front left fender. Once freed she was taken to Ashburne Vet for a check-up and found to be slightly greasy but in good health‚” Van Reenen added.

Thankfully, the kitten had a microchip and was reunited with her mom.

It is important to note that in winter, always check your tires and take a brief moment to listen for any odd sounds. Kittens have very little body fat and so they gravitate to warm spaces such as car engines. The problem is, once you start your car, the kitten can get sucked into the engine and that is never good.

A good way to prevent this is to park your car in a garage or double check each morning before starting the car up. By banging on the hood of your car, the kitten will startle and hopefully run off.

But the best preventative measure is to keep kittens locked safely within your homes until they are big enough to cope in the world.
