Knitters and crocheters across South Africa are preparing their needles and yarn for a massive project—creating the ‘Hugest Happiness Blanket’ the world has ever seen!

Gqeberha, South Africa (05 September 2024) — KnitWits across South Africa have been called to task for 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day’s most exciting project to date—creating the ‘Hugest Happiness Blanket’ in the world!

An idea that hopes to share joy with the world and warmth with South Africans who need it most, the Hugest Happiness Blanket is in the works and is set to be unveiled next year on 20 March for the United Nations’ International Day of Happiness.

Think thousands of blankets, each made with colours that incite joy both for the knitters and for those who will receive them as a way to keep warm in winter when the display is dismantled.

This will be the biggest happiness blanket the world has ever seen, finished with a bright smiling emoji at the centre, all of which will be revealed in Gqeberha!

“On March 20, 2025 ALL ROADS WILL LEAD TO GQEBERHA!!! The world’s eyes will certainly be on us on that day!!!” says Carolyn Steyn, 67 Blankets for Mandela Day founder.

“We need YOUR PLEDGE to help create the happy face,” she announces, adding that the project is already moving fast, with some ambassadors having already committed to the big smile, including the blue eyes, red mouth and parts of the massive yellow face.

How to Contribute to the ‘Hugest Happiness Blanket’

  • Each ‘pixel’ on the smiley is the equivalent of one blankie.
  • Blankets can be crocheted or knitted and any pattern is welcome.
  • A big blanket is considered 160cm or squares of 20cm x 40cm or 80 cm) or a strip (20cmx160cm).
  • All blankets need to be handed in by 7 February 2025.
  • Contact info@67blankets.co.za to get involved.
