After a terrible accident toward the end of last year, beloved Kruger National Park guide Chris unfortunately lost one of his eyes. While he lost one part of himself, he gained a lot from others. Thanks to community support, Chris is now well on his way to getting the medical care he needs!

Kruger National Park, South Africa (09 January 2025) — Kruger National Park guide Chris ‘Rasta’ Maseko faced a real spanner in the works recently.

Involved in a serious accident at the beginning of November last year, Guide Chris lost one of his eyes—eyes that have led his career.

While Chris was immensely grateful that it was an eye and not his life, the setback still remained. And without medical aid to help him get a prosthetic, the end of the year was met with immense stress.

But, despite losing a part of himself, Chris went on to gain something else. In the months following the incident, community support grew and grew for the safari guide, with friends and colleagues alike helping wherever help was needed.

From financial support to getting Chris to and from appointments, Dianne Wichman, who organised his crowdfunding campaign, explains that the community support has been immense.

People found him necessary specialists, a WhatsApp support group was started, and his crowdfunding campaign was met with all kinds of help.

“These people have all been amazing,” Diane shares.

In fact, Chris’s campaign is a testament to how much his community have rallied for him. Currently, it’s sitting at R24,337, which was raised out of the R30,000 goal, meaning he is only a few donations away from getting his prosthetic!

Chris’s operation is pencilled in for February.

“We hope to raise enough to cover not only the cost of the prosthetic eye, but also the transport and logistical expenses, and hopefully a little extra to support him through the coming months as he adjusts to this major life change,” says Diane.
