Liané Roux was born with three congenital heart defects, found when she was 4-months-old; thanks to donors, she had successful heart surgery.
Secunda, South Africa (06 May 2022) – 10-month-old baby Liané Roux brought the community of Secunda together over the past few months. She was born with three congenital heart defects and needed life-saving surgery.
When Liané was just four months old, her parents, Ashley and Quinton, took her to the doctor. She had a fever and had difficulty breathing. The doctor sent the family for tests at Steve Biko Academic hospital in Pretoria. This is where they received the difficult diagnosis.
Her heart defects could only be mended by a very intricate surgery that couldn’t be done at any state hospital. In fact, only the Maboneng Heart and Lung Institute in Johannesburg had been willing to do the surgery.
Her heart was weakened and overworked, making any kind of respiratory infection a significant risk. Liané desperately needed surgery, which would come at a massive cost as her parents who do not have medical aid.
The community rallied, and through several fundraising avenues, they were able to pay for the first three invoices leading up to the surgery. BackaBuddy recently reported that Liané’s surgery was a success.
Liané successfully had her first surgery on Friday, April 22, at the Sunninghill Hospital in Johannesburg. After some recovery, she underwent a second operation to have a pacemaker fitted that will be able to control her heartbeat.
Update: We received news from BackaBuddy, that sadly Liané passed away on the 7th of May 2022 due to complications. We are devastated by the news and send our condolences to Ashley and Quinton as well as to her extended family.
To support the family with Liané’s outstanding medical fees, donations are still welcome to the little one’s fundraiser.
