A Lifeline of Donor Milk

In the wake of an unimaginable loss, a community of donors stepped in to provide the “liquid gold” that helped Tebogo’s premature daughter grow from strength to strength.

South Africa (20 February 2026) – When the beginning of his fatherhood journey – a time that should bring joy and endearment – was met with unimaginable heartbreak, Tebogo Mabele found hope and a lifeline for his precious daughter where he’d least anticipated.

Tebogo’s daughter was born at 29 weeks, weighing 1.1 kg, in October 2025. In the weeks that followed, she faced enormous challenges as she fought to grow, develop, and thrive in the NICU.

“The care she received was extraordinary, but it was the donor breast milk that provided the critical nourishment and immune support she needed during those fragile early days,” he shares.

The heaviest, hardest and most heartbreaking ordeal came a few weeks after his daughter’s birth, when he was forced to face an incomprehensible loss. Tebogo’s wife passed away in the hospital in November 2025.

During that incredibly difficult time, a vital lifeline arrived at a critical moment for his daughter – donor milk from the South African Breastmilk Reserve, helping to stabilise her condition, support her development, and sustain her throughout her NICU stay.

The family has since relied on donor breast milk, which has significantly contributed to the growth and development of this little fighter.

“She spent two months in the NICU, and with the nourishment and benefits of donor milk, she has grown steadily and healthily. Today, in February 2026, she weighs just over 4.2 kg. A testament to her resilience and to the life-saving role that donor milk has played in her journey,” says Tebogo.

The grateful dad says his journey and the well-being of his little one would not have been possible without the generosity of donors and the tireless work of SABR.

“Your organisation connects families in need with compassionate donors, ensuring that vulnerable babies receive the best possible start. Your commitment to saving lives, supporting families, and advancing infant health has touched us deeply.”

It is moving to witness how the support of a community can bridge the gap between tragedy and hope. Tebego expresses his deepest gratitude to the organisation and the selfless mothers behind it, who have given his precious child an essential gift in an hour of great need and loss.

“To everyone involved with the South African Breast Milk Reserve: thank you for your courage, kindness, and impact. Your generosity has given our daughter a fighting chance at a healthy start in life, and your work continues to save babies and support families across the country.”
