The Lonehill Residents Association have started their annual soup drive once again to collect instant soups for the local street patrollers.
Winters in Johannesburg can be brutally cold, especially in the early hours of the mornings and late at night. Many neighbourhoods throughout the Gauteng region have street patrollers and night guards keeping an eye on everything.
These people are part of strategical groups to help fight crime in various neighbourhoods. There are about 320-night guards and street patrollers in the Lonehill area.
“We have 12 street patrollers each day and night, so in total there are 36 who work this shift at some point and get to do night duty. When it is a bitterly cold day, we also send soup out to the street patrollers to keep them warm.” – Avril Scribante, LRA General Manager.
The Lonehill Residents Association (LRA) have started to collect Cup-of-Soup packets as part of their winter soup drive. These packets are given out to the guards on duty each night.
The LRA shared their soup drive information on Facebook and we were really inspired by the idea. We thought about sharing it in the hopes that other neighbourhoods making use of street patrollers, could do the same.
The evenings are starting to get a lot colder as winter starts settling in. Each winter the LRA undertakes to distribute “Cup-a-Soup” packets to our street patrollers working the night shift. On average we receive about 2 000 packets of “cup-a-soup” and we want to encourage our residents to support this worthy initiative once again.
