Erica Martin was a teacher on the Island of Majuro 22 years ago when she met an incredible South African woman named Barbara. She is trying to reconnect with Barbara and needs your help!
Arizona, United States (15 January 2021) – Erica Martin is looking for a South African woman named Barbara who she met 22 years ago. She shared a post on her “Girls Love Travel group” in the hopes that someone would recognise the story. Many South African women on the group shared images of the Barbaras in their lives, but none were a match.
One South African then suggested that Erica reach out to Good Things Guy as we have written several stories about reconnecting people or their possessions.
This is Erica’s story of how she met Barbara along with an image of her from that time as well as a gift Barbara gave her.
“22 years ago I was living on the island of Majuro in the Marshall Islands. I was a teacher and frequently met travelers passing through the islands. One evening I met a woman named Barbara who was visiting from South Africa.
We talked for a while and during the conversation she asked if I liked to play Scrabble. The teacher in me was overjoyed. Turns out she was a Scrabble champion and she beat the pants off of me every night for nearly 2 weeks!! But FINALLY on her last night there, we played our last game and I beat her by one point! As a token of congratulations (or to soothe my bruised ego?) she gifted me a beautiful necklace/earring set from South Africa.
I have not seen or spoken to her since then but I tell her story every time someone asks me where I got my earrings. So if anyone knows a Barbara from South Africa who was a traveling Scrabble champion and remembers thoroughly pulverizing a young school teacher in Majuro, I’d love to connect!”
“To help, here’s everything I remember about her: She was a black woman, older than me (I was in my early 20s), taller than me, and I’m pretty sure she was wearing a yellow blouse the day I beat her! That’s all I’ve got, but you ladies are spectacular detectives. I’m overwhelmed and following every lead. Thanks again. Much love! – Erica”
