Mama Rosie

Mama Rosie was honoured with an award at the CNN Heroes Tribute. Actress Alfre Woodard introduced her to the audience with a beautiful tale of her hard work.

Mama Rosie was selected in the Top 10 for the CNN Hero of the Year award. She was the only person on the list outside of the US. Mama was selected because of her orphanage in Khayelitsha. It all started the day she found a little boy on her doorstep in 2000. Without hesitating, she took him in and cared for him. She was known for caring for the children as she ran a free daycare and fed the hungry children in her community.

Mama travelled all the way to the US to attend the Heroes Tribute. She shared her passion for her work during her acceptance speech and called it her calling in life.

“My job is not 9 to 5, I did not have a choice! This is a calling.”

“I am trying to help as many kids as I can and the need is so great, so endless. My wish for them is to be educated so that they can be advocates of change to help other orphans. This is why we always say “It takes a village to raise a child”, please join us to raise more orphans. Thank you to CNN for the exposure.” – Mama Rosie
