Over seven-hundred shacks were washed away in Mamelodi by the floods that shook the Centurion community; now, organisations are working to support the community.
Mamelodi, South Africa – Whenever there is a disaster, drought, fire or political hostage, Gift of the Givers is there to offer aid to those in need. Since founding 27 years ago, the organisation sends volunteers all over the world to assist however possible.
Their most recent cause has been to assist the people displaced by the flooding that washed away an entire community. Over 700 shacks were washed away in Mamelodi, leaving people destitute.
Gift of the Givers has confirmed that they are ready and willing to help. They have a team at ground zero, assessing how best to support the Mamelodi community.
A spokesperson for the organisation stated that they are assessing the damage and plan to help people rebuild once it is safe to do so. At the moment, there is a great need for hygiene items, clothing, nappies and blankets.
The people have been left with nothing. A home affairs truck has been deployed to the area as well to assist people who need to apply for their identity documentation again.
In May of this year, the organisation helped rebuild 80 homes after the Durban floods.
