Steve Greig quite suddenly lost his much beloved dog. No matter what he did, he couldn’t get over the death of his companion, until he made the decision to make his death mean something.

He explains, “A month or two went by and I still felt so horrible about it. I decided that the only way I would feel better was if something good happened that probably wouldn’t have happened if he had not died. So I adopted a 12-year-old Chihuahua with a heart murmur and four bad knees. And that was just the beginning…”

Currently, his home in Colorado, houses 10 dogs (mostly seniors), a pig named Bikini who thinks she’s a dog, two chickens, two ducks, two pigeons, a couple of cats (who live in the garage and are on mouse duty), a rabbit and a pond full of koi.

“A normal day for me is getting up at 5 a.m. and making breakfast for all of them. Which, you know… there are 10 dogs and most of them have different diets.”

He also regularly takes them to grooming sessions and the vet, to make sure that they live out their lives healthily and happily. Of course, this also means supervising the treatments of those pups with health issues.

Greig also returns from work over lunch break to get them outside and provide goodies. While he’s out, the awesome pack gets time to play and have a lot of fun.

People might wonder about how Greig manages to do it all, and how he motivates himself to take on the monumental task of giving these loving pets a loving home.

“I grew up with a lot of pets,” he explains. “Both my parents were animal lovers. They pretty much always let me have whatever I wanted as long as I could take care of it.  Senior dogs are just wiser animals, so they just make it feel like home.”

“It’s just fulfilling knowing that these guys are happy and loved and well-taken care of. “

“It makes my days worthwhile.”
