Marlize Labuschagne is making sure her friend and fellow student gets the chance to enrol for her Master’s final year before the time runs out.
South Africa (29 January 2021) – Marlize Labuschagne heard that her friend and fellow Educational Psychology Master’s degree student, Sitile Khoza was at risk of losing her place in the programme due to financial constraints.
Sitile had been accepted into the Master’s programme and hoped to earn a bursary to cover her studies and boarding. Her plan was also to earn an extra income through tutoring and other part-time jobs.
Due to the Lockdown, she could not secure any funding and her ability to earn an extra income that was big enough to cover these expenses slipped away too.
“Even though she spent the majority of her year at home, participating in online learning, the university still expects her to pay for the boarding. Until Sitile can pay her arrear fees for 2020, she can not register for her second, and final, Master’s year.
Sitile loves her community. She will make an exceptional educational psychologist, and has dreams of taking these skills into the rural areas of South Africa. She has a heart for change and empowerment, as has been proven by her involvement with causes such as the Centre for the study of AIDS, where she served as a community outreach member. She has also volunteered for the United Nations, South Africa. Sitile has successfully completed two honours degrees, and she worked hard last year, in spite of many challenges, to pass all of her modules. She is loved by her classmates, and we all want to see her succeed!
The funds raised through this challenge will cover Sitile’s study and boarding debt for 2020, as well as pay for her registration in 2021. Should we raise more than the target, it will go towards paying for her studies and accommodation for 2021.”
Marlize is adding to the campaign by promising to run 1km for every R100 that is raised for her friend. She plans to check the crowdfund once a week and then run those kms the following week.
“My contribution to this campaign will be to run 1km for every R100 that we raise. I will check in every Sunday to determine how many kilometres I have to run in the following week, and I will share my progress, along with the progress of this campaign under the hashtag #steps4sitile.”
Marlize wants people to understand, she is far from fit, and this challenge will not only help her friend but push her to get healthy and fit.
You can donate to Marlize’s crowdfund here. Already she has raised R500 which means you can count on her running 5kms next week. Let’s see if we can get that number way up! (Sorry Marlize)
