Nickey Seger launched a crowdfund to keep Nellie Khuzwayo in private school for her matric year; now, she is finished with school and looking forward to her future as a nurse.

Johannesburg, South Africa (18 July 2022) – In January of this year, we shared the story of Nickey Seger, who planned to run 14 half-marathons to raise funds for an exceptional young lady’s matric year. The story moved so many people that the crowdfund was fully funded and beyond in just a few days. Now, seven months later, Nickey has shared an update for everyone who donated towards the crowdfund.

Nickey Seger met Goodwill Khuzwayo in 2005 at work. Goodwill had been in a taxi accident, which left him disabled, but he was a dedicated husband and father, doing everything he could to take care of his family.

Moved by Goodwill’s dedication, Nickey started writing into the then Radio 94.7 ‘947 Xmas Wish’ to get him the help he needed. She wrote every year for three years before her letter was chosen. Goodwill got his ‘947 Xmas Wish’ granted; he wanted to send his daughter to a private school.

Nellie Khuzwayo was sent to a private school in Cosmo City for her grade 2 year. She loved it, but sadly once the year was up, she had to return to a government school as Goodwill couldn’t cover her grade 3 fees.

When Nickey heard that Nellie was dealing with horrible situations in class, she decided to step forward and cover Nellie’s fees. She made a promise to the family that Nellie would matriculate from a private school.

And so, Nickey went on to cover Nellie’s fees for the last nine years. Sadly with the pandemic affecting so many, Nickey realised this would be the first year she could not help cover the fees. Not one to give up, Nickey started a crowdfund and asked for help. In return, she planned to do 14 half-marathons to help raise awareness.

The crowdfund was fully funded, and so Nellie got to complete her final year at private school. Some of the other highlights in Matric include the school dance. Generous donors once again stepped forward to make sure Nellie had the best time at her dance.

“To all our wonderful donors

We have an update on Nellie.

Nellie finished writing her Cambridge Matric exams the beginning of June 2022 and is now awaiting her results which will hopefully be out during the 1st week in August.

She also attended her Matric dance on Friday 24 June and she looked absolutely gorgeous. Her dress was sponsored by Alicia Van der Merwe from Ali Cia Couture and the Photoshoot sponsored by Louise Olivier from Wanitta’s Photography. It was certainly a beautiful highlight in Nellie’s Matric year.

Nellie has applied to Netcare as well to start her studies next year as a student nurse, we are just awaiting her results.”
