The community have raised more than R100 000 in less than a day to help Matthew Mayston.
Johannesburg, South Africa (17 June 2020) – A community is rallying together to raise funds for Matthew Mayston, a 25-year-old Olivedale resident, who was shot in a cellphone mugging, while walking his dog.
While out walking his dog on youth day, Mayston became another tragic statistic of people affected by incredibly violent crime in South Africa. He was shot in the abdomen for his cellphone!
Due to the nature of his injuries, he had to be airlifted to Millpark, but due to unfortunate circumstances the Mayston family does not currently have a hospital plan or medical aid, he is currently on his way to Joburg Gen.
“We are not sure of the nature of his injuries at this stage, but due to the fact he had to be airlifted, there are costs that have occurred.” – Mayston family.
The family started a Backabuddy page, and within the space of a couple of hours, funds to go towards covering medical bills and rehabilitation support started streaming in.
“He was just carrying on with his normal day – this didn’t have to happen!! I know there are so many people who need help, who are starving, who have lost jobs, who have fallen on such hard times, insane cases of gender-based violence, crime left, right and centre – I myself feel so helpless because I can’t help everyone, but if you can and are able to, please consider helping this family,” – Louise Cameron, friend of the family.
Collectively, the community has raised more than R100 000 in less than a day to help Mayston, but they still have a long way to go to get to the amount needed to get him through this.
