83-year-old Wilson Mavhaga uses his daily exercise routine to bring joy to people in Parktown – waving his flag; he is a daily reminder to live each day with joy.

Parktown, South Africa (14 December 2023) – A Parktown resident has shared the heartwarming story of Wilson Mavhaga, who walks to the intersection of Oxford Road and Victoria Avenue in Parktown every morning to exercise during rush hour traffic, wearing his red top hat, whilst waving a South African flag.

“I drive past him every morning with my sons on our way to school and he always brightens our day! I parked my car yesterday and went to meet to him. What a delightful gentleman! He said he’s been coming to the intersection to exercise for more years than he can remember and he goes every day unless it’s raining heavily.

When I asked him why, he said he just wants to show people that it’s good to exercise and you should never stop! And that it makes him very happy to see people smile and wave at him – especially children.

Wilson turns 84 in January and says he is very happy to be alive. He brings a flag because he loves his country! Wilson is an inspiration!”

Wilson’s message is wholesome: stay fit, spread joy, and remember to smile. Perhaps that is the secret to longevity.

Have you seen Wilson before? If you come across him, give him a hoot or a wave.
