South Africa (11 September 2023) — The court is out of session and the crownings are official for this year’s Miss, Mr and Ms Deaf South Africa who will now step into a whole new chapter as role models and local icons.

The titles became official over the weekend in Cape Town where the MDSA finals took centre stage; aptly in tune with September being the National Month of Deaf People and Deaf Awareness Month.

The MDSA pageant spearheads the social mantra that a beautiful heart is universally understood—no matter your spectrum of ability. Over and above spotlighting the incredible people in the deaf community, the MDSA pageant also reflects love and support for the community itself in South Africa as many continue to shatter glass ceilings (like mainstream pageantry) to pave stages where more people can stand tall.

And the Crowns Go to:

  • Monequ Edwards—Miss Deaf South Africa
  • Justin Makinson—Mr Deaf South Africa
  • Sylvia Monjanko—Ms Deaf South Africa

After returning back to Gauteng, Moneque expressed her

Taking to social media, the new Miss Deaf SA expressed her gratitude and appreciation of the other finalists in sign language.

“Your passions, dedication, and empowerment are truly inspiring. I am proud to stand with you all as we celebrate the diversity and strength of our community.”

“I am ready for all of you, South Africa!”
