Nadine Maselle was chosen by the Facebook Community Leadership Programme and the Dream Factory Foundation to donate a computer lab to a school in need.
Salt River, Cape Town – The Facebook Community Leadership Programme and the Dream Factory Foundation have partnered to open a computer lab at Salt River High School in Cape Town. The facility – called the Dream Lab – is a donation to the school from Nadine Maselle, a South African fellow of the Facebook Community Leadership Programme and an alumna of Salt River High.
Maselle was selected as one of three South African fellows of the Facebook Community Leadership Programme last year, a global initiative that invests in people who are building communities using Facebook’s tools and platforms. She received a $50,000 grant from Facebook to be used for her community initiative, ‘Salt River High Tutoring’.
“I am happy to have this opportunity to give something back to my school. It is wonderful that learners at Salt River High School will have access to tools and resources that will prepare them for the future of science, innovation, digital technology and engineering.” – Nadine Maselle
Maselle, who is currently in college, tutors 20-plus learners from her school in mathematics, science and computers. She also spearheaded a gardening and recycling project with her school’s principal. Her skills in science, math and information technology were self-taught, and she has dedicated her spare time to sharing her knowledge with her peers.
The Dream Lab is a creative and inspirational space where the learners will develop their skills and knowledge and achieve their dreams through tools such as coding, robotics, programming, virtual reality, and computer engineering. This is the first time the school has had a fully equipped computer lab.
“Supporting communities and empowering local leaders is core to our mission. We are delighted to partner with a community leader with Nadine’s level of commitment, enthusiasm and vision for making a difference to her community,” says Anna Bofa ,Head of Community Partnerships, Global Programs at Facebook.
“The energy she shows as she balances her tutoring work with her own studies is truly inspirational.”
