New Horizon

Vuyo has dreamed about being a pilot since he was 6, thanks to MySchool and NICRO he can now see his dreams coming true, a better future and new horizon!

Since Vuyo was six he has been excited by the idea of being a commercial pilot. He never thought his dream would be something he could actually do but thanks to MySchool, Vuyo had an incredible first flying experience.

By aiming to rewrite stories for children like Vuyo, NICRO uses MySchool funds to help vulnerable youngsters take to the skies and achieve their dreams.

Vuyo described the experience as the best day of his life! Vuyo recently graduated from NICRO’s two year Safety Ambassador youth justice programme. The programme is aimed at youth still in school.

“This two year programme seeks to reduce anti-social behaviour among youth at school level by using peers to interact with and influence communities against committing anti-social acts.”

“The peer socialization model of the programme underpins that the process of creating partnerships within and without the school community leads to pro-social action and a supportive environment that supports behavioural change.”

Vuyo lost two years of his schooling life to delinquency and addiction but thanks to the programme he has managed to better himself. Vuyo is now the President of his school in Khayelitsha. He is an outstanding teacher and a proactive role model to others.

“Now one step closer to realising his dream, Vuyo plans to become a commercial pilot – a dream he never thought might become a reality.”

NICRO specialises in social crime prevention and offender reintegration, boasts a rich, unparalleled history in human rights, juvenile justice and innovative criminal justice reform. The organisation was started in 1910 as a way to work in the criminal justice sector and prevent the cycle of crime.

Vuyo’s new horizon is an exciting one and he isn’t the first student to benefit from taking to the skies, many have been before him and many will fly because they were inspired by him!
