Sephokwane and Kaila Germishuizen became friends while running a long-distance race. The pair worked together to get through thorns and both inspired South Africa.

Sephokwane, a grade 3 learner from Groblersdal Academy was having a tough time during a 2km long-distance athletics race. She had previously placed 3rd in the race but this time around, she couldn’t continue as there was a large patch of painful thorns.

Sephokwane was barefoot and in pain when Kaila Germishuizen came along. She saw the agony that Sephokwane was in and offered to carry her across the thorny patch. They encountered a marshal that had said Kaila couldn’t carry Sephokwane, this broke Kaila’s heart as she couldn’t bear seeing her new friend struggle.

Refusing to give in, she picked up Sephokwane once more and helped her through the final thorny patch before heading off to finish her race.

Since posting the original story here, many people wanted to do more for both the girls. People reached out to donate shoes to Sephokwane. She has since been shoe shopping and chosen a pair that will help her run her next race.

Kaila was honoured by her school with a medal and special award for her kind deed. The two have since met up and happy faces and smiles were all around. We love that these two young ladies have inspired so many people and shown the true nature of what it means to be a South African.

We are always better together!
