5FM radio personality Nick Hamman is using his platform and influence to make a real difference in the lives of children with autism at Thulasizwe School for Autism in Soweto.
Soweto, South Africa (07 February 2025) – It’s always so heartwarming to see those who have been blessed with amazing blessings and opportunities in life, pay it forward by being a blessing unto others, especially those in need.
After having connected with thousands of South Africans as a radio presenter for over 10 years, 5FM’s Nick Hamman has recently chosen to use his platform to champion an amazing cause – helping Thulasizwe School for Autism in Soweto build a kitchen and food technology classroom to empower students with autism.
Founded in 2016, the Thulasizwe School for Autism is the first autism-specific school in Soweto, providing education and essential support for 100 students aged 4 to 18.
“I’ve always believed in using my platform to make a difference. When I heard about the amazing work Thulasizwe School for Autism does to support children with unique needs, I knew it was something I wanted to be a part of. Education and inclusivity are issues close to my heart,” shares Nick.
This remarkable school faces significant challenges, including the lack of a proper kitchen and classroom facilities for vocational training.
Nick is championing a BackaBuddy campaign to build a much-needed kitchen and food technology classroom.
Currently, meals are prepared in a makeshift kitchen and students eager to learn culinary skills have had to travel to external facilities – an arrangement that is no longer sustainable.
These spaces will not only provide nutritious meals for the students but also equip them with valuable life skills and vocational training, fostering independence and future opportunities.
Thanks to generous sponsors, R125,805 has already been raised for the building project.
Beyond serving the school, these facilities will also double as a bakery, benefiting the local community by creating job opportunities and fostering entrepreneurship.
“This campaign is about giving children with autism the chance to thrive in environments where they feel safe, understood, and empowered. I’ve seen how a little support can create incredible opportunities for those who face challenges. This is about trying to level the playing field and making sure every child has a shot at success,” Nick explains.
If the campaign’s fundraising target is not entirely reached, donations will still be used effectively – funding enhancements to schools such as the refurbishment of play areas, the acquisition of essential learning materials, and the creation of a sensory room to better meet students’ needs.
With Nick’s backing, combined with the generosity of donors, this fundraising initiative hopes to bring hope and empowerment to these children who want nothing more than to achieve greatness in life.
“Every contribution, no matter how small, has the potential to create massive change. Let’s show the power of collective kindness and make a difference together,” Nick encourages.
