Pastor Daniel was laying in his warm bed when he thought of the children sleeping in cold shacks and decided to collect 100 blankets, one for each of them.
Pastor Daniel’s story started when he was a Pastor’s assistant for a church in Diepsloot. By day he was a gardener and he used to walk past a small community on his daily commute. After seeing the need there he decided to form a church for the small community and has since built so much more!
From the humble beginning he set up a tent for his congregation. Spending early hours of every Sunday pitching the tent and then taking it down again after the service. With help from his small congregation they built a make-shift structure until another church helped them build the tin building they use today.
“While working in the Laezonia community I saw the need for a preschool. Unemployed moms were taking their children with them to the Shebeen at 10am in the morning. Children were being exposed to things they should never see. I decided to open up the building during the week, and one of the gogos in the community volunteered to run it as a daycare.”
The church building now hosts a thriving daycare that cares for the children of the community. Daniel has made something really important for the community and plans to give back even more!
He spent a night thinking about the children and decided to collect 100 blankets to keep them warm in the winter. Quickly he managed to collect 50 blankets while the Facebook page ‘I Have A Name’ shared his story, he has had offers of many more blankets helping him reach his goal of 100!
” I was lying in bed the other night – wrapped warmly in blankets, with a proper roof over my head, and walls of mortar around me…and my heart just broke thinking of the little ones in this community that sleep in tin shacks, and who do not have enough blankets to keep warm. I’m collecting blankets for the kids – one per child – and would like to distribute them as soon as possible . We need about 100 to cover the community kids – and I’ve already had donations for about 50.”
