Student debt is highly stressful, especially when it prevents a student from registering to continue their studies; generous donors helped a local student pay off her debt.

Grahamstown, South Africa (25 February 2022) – When they say every penny counts, they mean it! One student’s debt was whittled away thanks to many people donating just R60. Abonga Zingela shared a story about the student not being able to register due to outstanding fees and asked if people could please help with R60.

The student, who has opted to remain anonymous, needed to pay off her remaining debt with Rhodes University before she would be allowed to register for her next academic year. With the deadline for registration looming, she was blown away when she saw people had started paying her debt.

After a few days, the student’s debt was paid in full, and she could register for the new academic year. Putting her one step closer to her dream of completing her Bachelor of Science Honours.

Generous strangers each donated R60 or more towards her debt. Each person decided that they would help a total stranger complete her education.

We spoke to the student to find out how this has affected her, and she shared that she was deeply moved.

“I had already accepted that I might not be able to further my studies and it was a sad reality but to say I’m grateful would be an understatement, I will forever remember this and be grateful for those who donated with any amount.”

A total of 21 donors helped pay off the debt and enabled the student to register successfully.

“I want to thank them for making it possible for me to further my studies, just the humility that they extended for a stranger and playing a huge part in my dreams. I pray that God multiples they blessings and that they are forever met with the same grace they extended to me”

When asked what her studies will lead to, the student shared that she is very interested in working within the mining industry.

“I am currently focused on igneous Petrology which is the field I hope to explore. I am obsessed with anything mine related so hoping to expand in that field and hopefully get my master’s before joining the workforce.

I want to be a petroleum geologist where I’ll focus on oil deposits”

A group of kind, generous people, will ensure that the student is one year closer to her dream career.
