A little Capetonian is in many hearts right now after battling respiratory failure; breathing with one lung and a ventilator. His family reached out for help, and loads of people are answering the call.
Cape Town (12 April, 2023) — When little Abu-Bakr Cassiem was admitted to hospital in 2022, his family had no idea that it would be the beginning of multiple specialist consultations, big procedures and a ventilator joining the family to keep their baby breathing.
Abu-Bakr (1) had been diagnosed with respiratory failure toward the end of last year, leaving the little one reliant on one lung and a ventilator.
According to his mother, Azraah, their baby’s new journey started the day she and his dad made the decision to put him on that ventilator for recovery.
“Within a few hours, he went into the theatre and was placed on the ventilator. After 4 hours in the waiting room, the first words that were said to us as parents were, “Mommy and Daddy, your baby is very sick “, and this is when my heart broke. My son’s journey started here, and this is where his life changed forever.”—Azraah Hendricks.
Since then, the little Capetonian has put up a strong fight, battling Carbon Dioxide poisoning, Covid while in the hospital and breathing as a struggle. Despite the moments his loved ones were told to ‘prepare for the worst’, his family remains hopeful, and now, South Africans are too.
Through BackABuddy, the family reached out to South Africans and people around the world for help with the treatment and medical assistance little Abu-Bakr needs that they cannot afford.
To date, the family has raised R45 287 for the little warrior. You can learn more about his story and make any contributions via his BackABuddy page.
