People have been raising their concern over a Cattle Grid in Pietermaritzburg that had become filled with mud and was no longer working to keep the wild animals within their boundaries. One man took it upon himself to clear out the mud.
Andrew Smale heard of a cattle grid, at the Bisley Nature Reserve, that was blocked up after it was published about in ‘The Witness’. According to the newspaper, the municipality had received over 30 complaints about the grid but had failed to send anyone to sort it out.
One Friday afternoon, Andrew picked up his shovel and drove over to the cattle grid. He got down on his knees and started shovelling out the dirt.
Within a few minutes, he had cleared out half the grid and had a curious visitor watching what he was up to.
“In response to the article in The Natal Witness, this morning regarding the Bisley nature reserve cattle crossing that keeps the wildlife in. It is sorted, not as easy as writing to the papers. But done” – Andrew Smale
His friends thought what he did was incredibly proactive and praised his actions.
“Initiative like this deserves reward bru! Well done cuzzy! Proud I am!” – Lindsay Bulmer
“Thank you, Andrew Smale. How wonderful the world would be if we each had your attitude & just did our bit! But the world is still wonderful!!!” – Trudy Stegen
“I drove past you twice wondering who you were and why you were doing it. Well done bud. Appreciate it. And it wasn’t a cool day either. Thank you from our community. Nobody looks after our area anymore. We often pick up rubbish in the area and cut the grass there.” – Jamie Stockley
