Mpumalanga, South Africa (09 September 2021) – Constable Nelisiwe Piyose and Sergeant Tebogo Nkomo were out on patrol when they encountered a woman in the process of giving birth.
The duo was driving along on Sunday the 5th of September 2021 when Constable Piyose saw the woman sitting on the pavement in obvious distress. She quickly alerted Sergeant Nkomo, and they made a U-turn. They learned the woman was in labour and alerted the local Emergency Medical Services (EMS).
She soon started screaming due to her unbearable labour pains. Constable Piyose, who is a mother of two, acted as a midwife and helped the woman deliver a healthy baby boy. EMS personnel arrived after the baby was born and took both the mother and baby to Sakhile Hospital for medical treatment.
The Provincial Commissioner has commended Constable Nelisiwe Piyose and Sergeant Tebogo Nkomo for going the extra mile in helping the woman to give birth to her baby safely.
Lieutenant General Semakaleng Manamela has said that Constable Piyose displayed a character of a true police officer. At times, members will be expected to carry out certain duties beyond their line functions.
It is safe to say that both officers went above the call of duty to welcome the baby into this world.
