The Pride Shelter, South Africa’s first shelter dedicated to the LGBTQI+ community, needs maintenance and upgrades before winter. This Pride Month, we can help make a difference!
Cape Town, South Africa (07 June 2022) – Cape winters can be brutal; the cold, stormy, windy days are most unpleasant and even more so if one finds themselves without appropriate shelter. The Pride Shelter in Cape Town offers a safe haven for members of the LGBTQI+ community who find themselves without a home and need a helping hand.
The shelter requires upgrades, maintenance and some repairs before the true winter sets in. The home is falling apart in places. The Pride Shelter is Africa’s first LGBTQI+ shelter and has been running since 2011. Based in Cape Town, the shelter accommodates 20 people, who can stay there for up-to three months.
The Pride Shelter Trust offers accommodation, counselling, wellness and skills development programmes for the residents on an ongoing basis. The shelter’s goal is to help people get back on their feet and reintegrate into society.
The shelter is trying to raise R80,000 to cover these repairs using BackaBuddy and asks for volunteers to come forward to help them do the much-needed repairs. To date, they have managed to raise just over R25,000 for the work on the house.
There are seven main jobs that need doing; these include:
- Exterior construction of the building – scaffolding and painting
- Fixing of roof
- Interior construction – plastering and painting of all rooms in the House
- Electrical maintenance
- Plumbing maintenance
- Fixing of windows and doors
- Fixing the security gate
So if you are looking for a cause to contribute to this Pride Month, the Pride Shelter requires donors, volunteers and sponsors. You can donate via the BackaBuddy here or reach out via the website here for more information.
GroundUp’s Ashraf Hendricks reported on the Shelter in May and gave a great deal of insight into the damages in need of repair and the maintenance needed for the building. You can see the video below.
