Pinelands North Primary School teacher Megan Culligan has started a crowdfund to raise the money needed to keep a former student in school.

Pinelands, South Africa (17 January 2023) – 11-year-old Siyabonga Lusaseni has thrived over the last five years at Pinelands North Primary School. He is now in grade 6 but financial struggles at home are threatening his chances of staying at his beloved school. His former teacher heard the news and decided to raise the funds needed to keep him at his current school.

The Lusaseni family, like many in South Africa, has difficult choices to make in order to make ends meet during these tough financial times. They are a loving family from Khayelitsha who have done everything to make sure Siyabonga has the best education possible. Thankfully, Siyabonga had a sponsor who covered the first five years of his education but now the responsibility has been left to the Lusaseni family.

Siyabonga has left a memorable impression on his teacher who has managed to raise some of the funds to keep him at his school. Teacher Megan Culligan taught Siyabonga in grades one and two and knew, he is deserving of this continued educational support.

“I have had the privilege of seeing Siya grow and thrive in this environment. He is a beautiful little boy with a heart of gold. He loves school and learning, and has built many wonderful relationships with his teachers and peers over the years. He is full of energy, love and enjoys sports and being active.” – Megan Culligan

Since the launch of the campaign, over R37 000 has been raised towards the fundraising target of R56 000. The total amount will be paid by BackaBuddy directly to the school, which will facilitate covering the costs of Siyabonga’s school fees, aftercare, tutoring, and the purchase of a tablet, which is required for grades 6 and onward.

If you would like to support Siyabonga, you can do so via Backabuddy here.
